Construction

The present globalisation of world markets is due in large part to the internationalization of the services sector. Turkish construction services are one of the major sectors which contributes to the exports of the Turkish services sector.

[More:]

Turkish international contracting started its rapid growth with the first contract which was signed in the 1970's in Libya. North Africa and the Middle East remained major markets for many years. Apart from the Middle East and North African market in which Turkish contractors have enjoyed a great share of civil engineering and electromechanical erection work, the former USSR and some European countries have opened their construction market to Turkish Contractors. Today, they are working in 4 continents and 49 countries, using all the financial, managerial and technological instruments of international contracting standards.

Now Turkey is among the top countries who export construction services. Today Turkish contractors are capable of competing with the world's leading contractor companies in the international construction market with their reliability, creativity and cost effectiveness. In the period of 1972-2000 the total value of work undertaken by Turkish contractors in 51 countries reached $48 billion. Today the share of Turkish contracting in international global contracting services is about 2-3%.

Most of the Turkish Contractors are organized under the Turkish Contractors Association. The members of the Turkish Contractors Association have undertaken about 60% of the domestic, and almost 95% of the international projects. These projects cover a wide range of fields: all kinds of civil engineering and industrial activities, such as dams, hydroelectric power plants, industrial plants, large scale petroleum and natural gas pipelines, thermal power plants, fertilizer plants, petrochemical complexes and refineries, motorways, tunnels, large housing projects, high-rise buildings, hotel and touristic resorts.
