Industries

  • Agriculture

Historically, the agriculture sector has been Turkey's largest employer and a major contributor to the country's GDP, exports and industrial growth. However, as the country has developed, agriculture has declined in importance relative to the rapidly growing industry and services sectors.

Although the share of agriculture in the Turkish economy has tended to fall over a period of several decades due to the increase in industrial and services sectors, it still accounts for a relatively larger share of total output and employment than in many other countries. Agriculture's share of GDP declined from 35 percent in 1970 to 22 percent in 1980 and to 14 percent in 2000.

  • Furniture in Turkey

Furniture production in Turkey dates back to the 19th century and was done in small workshops as an artisan production. Today, furniture is produced both in workshops and industrial-scale manufacturing units. Furniture production is highly fragmented among a large number of small workshops. These small workshops play an important role in producing handcarved and handmade furniture. Workshops are flexible establishments in nature and have enough capacity and labor force to expand their production line in order to supply large orders. Most of existing furniture factories and large workshops have been in business since 1975. Large-scale furniture firms produce standard models by using automated mass-production techniques and most of their production is oriented towards exports.

  • Hazelnut

The hazelnut was native to the Black Sea coast long before our era, not as a cultivated product but growing wild on trees or shrubs on the steep slopes of the mountains that are parallel to the coast for hundreds of kilometers from east to west. Historic documents reveal that hazelnuts have been grown along the Black Sea coast in northern Turkey since 300 B.C.

  • Turkish Coffee

Turkish coffee is famed for the way it is made. It is prepared in an ibrik, a small coffee pot that is heated. Sugar is added during the brewing process, not after, so the need for a serving spoon is eliminated. Cream or milk is never added to Turkish coffee, and sugar is optional. It is always served in demitasse cups.
In some regions, your fortune is told by the placement of the coffee grinds left in the cup!
